The Poughkeepsie Area Chamber of Commerce
Keeping the community connected since 1907!
Born from the merger of a Board of Trade and a Retail Merchants’ Association on November 20, 1907, the Poughkeepsie Area Chamber of Commerce has been a resource for both its members and the local community. From sponsoring an Emergency Work Bureau during the Great Depression Era, which has grown into a variety of programs implemented through our Workforce Development Center, to being a staunch supporter helping to create the renaissance now taking place along the City of Poughkeepsie’s Main Street, our organization takes pride in being a dynamic member of the community in which we work and live.
In the early years, due to the enterprise of the chamber, a dozen or more new businesses located in the city of Poughkeepsie. Some of those companies include FIAT Automobile Co. from Turin, Italy; Schatz Manufacturing Co.; and James L. Taylor Manufacturing Co. Today the area boasts a well-educated labor force of more than 131,000, low unemployment, and the opportunity for development and expansion of jobs and businesses. Under the supervision of Chamber President and CEO Charles North, the organization is still dedicated to being an economic driver by promoting the “Think Local First” campaign and supporting area businesses.
